What it costs and what to ask
Safe work is priced by uncertainty. The more you can tell a technician before they load the van, the narrower the quote — and the less likely you are to be handed an emergency rate for a job that was never an emergency.
Published price ranges
| Job | Typical range | What moves the price |
|---|---|---|
| Opening a safe | $150 – $500+ (avg ≈ $440) | Key override and manipulation cheapest; drilling and repairing a TL-rated safe dearest |
| Service call-out | $50 – $150 fee | Charged on top of labour, in most markets |
| Labour, business hours | $50 – $100 / hour | — |
| Emergency labour | $150 – $250 / hour | Nights, weekends, “now” |
| Delivery / moving a safe | $75 – $300 | Weight, stairs, distance |
| Installation and anchoring | $150 – $600 | Floor type, floor level, access |
Ranges are from published US price guides for 2026 and are useful as orders of magnitude, not as quotes. European figures differ by country; the structure — call-out plus labour plus parts — is the same everywhere.
Have these eight facts ready
- Maker and model of the safe
Plate on the door, door frame or back.
- Maker and type of the lock
Dial or keypad, and the name printed on it. This decides the tooling.
- What exactly happens
Silence, beeps, correct-code sound, handle stiff, dial spinning free.
- What you already tried
Especially anything forceful. Hiding it costs you money later.
- Whether the safe was attacked, dropped or drilled
Changes the job to relocker work.
- Where it stands
Floor, stairs, lift, whether it is anchored.
- Approximate weight and size
Decides whether one technician can work alone.
- Proof of ownership
Any technician worth calling will ask. Have it before they do.
Questions that sort specialists from general locksmiths
- “Do you open safes yourself, or do you subcontract?”
- “Have you worked on this make before, and do you carry a replacement lock for it?”
- “If you drill, do you repair the hole and replace the relocker on the same visit?”
- “Is the quote fixed, or hourly with a cap?”
- “Will the safe still be usable afterwards, and will its rating be affected?”
- “What proof of ownership do you require?” — if the answer is “none”, call someone else.
